SPANISH 3 LIST OF SPECIAL PROJECTS


HANDWRITTEN: All assignments, except the final copy of Special Projects, are to be handwritten, not on computer. Special projects rough drafts should be hand written and turned in with final copy. 

NOTE: Be aware that by the end of the semester you must read a short story in Spanish & write a review. Choose one now and be working on it all semester. 

CULTURAL EVENT: Due any time before the end of the semester. Attend a Cultural Event sometime during this semester related to Latina culture. Write up a mini report in English, one paragraph, explaining the name of the event, where it was held, who sponsored it, what was presented, and your impressions of it. IDEAS: There are some sponsored by local art, music, or ethnic clubs, churches, and colleges. This could be a concert, poetry reading, art exhibit, dance presentation, celebration, festival, or film. See if your community holds an annual multicultural celebration. Dates to consider: National Hispanic Month is September 15 – October 15 due to the high number of Spanish-speaking countries that celebrate their independence day during that time period. March 31 is  César Chávez birthday, a state holiday in AZ, CA, CO, MI, NM, TX, UT, WI. Contact your local community college: some show International Films with English subtitles, some college Spanish classes have activities open to the public, demonstrations or displays around Nov 1st  or 2nd in honor of “ dia de los muertos,”OR May 5th in honor of “cinco de mayo” (the anniversary of the battle of Puebla).

 

FILM REVIEW: Watch a movie of Hispanic origin, in Spanish and then write a film review in Spanish. Write a short summary (1 paragraph) of the plot, an analysis (1 paragraph) explaining what message the movie was trying to present, and a review (1 paragraph) that either does or does not recommend the movie to others and the reason for your opinion. (due the week after each film viewing)

Report on your discoveries by expressing recommendations to a fellow Spanish student, referring to specific information, links, that may be helpful in learning Spanish or cultural awareness. This project will be in English, using the computer, emailed to the teacher



POEM

Write a poem in Spanish on any subject, any style. One page at least.


FAIRY TALE

Write a fairy tale or legend in Spanish. Begin with “Once upon a time…” (Había una vez…) Name the characters, include a reason for their names. Use descriptive adjectives so the reader can visualize the characters and setting. Exaggerate and embellish the events. Use the words always (siempre) and never (nunca). Include dialogue. Give the story a title that a six-year-old would enjoy. To conclude your story, ask yourself: Therefore what? Add a moral. 


SHORT STORY

Read a short story in Spanish. As you read, create a personal Spanish/English vocabulary list of words that were new to you. (Note: List should be handwritten; a computer generated list is not acceptable. Scraps of wrinkled paper, note paper, and lined notebooks paper with folds are fine! This should be created AS you read. Write a review in Spanish which explains the message of the author and why you either do or do not recommend this short story to someone else.

ARGUMENTATIVE PAPER

Write an argumentative paper in Spanish. Choose an opinion on any subject and convince the reader of your views. Length: 2 pages 


CULTURAL AWARENESS: 
Read the children’s book, “Esperanza Rising.” Do research on the immigration problem. Present your findings.


BULLFIGHTING REPORT: Due: Write a report on bullfighting in Spain, based on newspaper accounts, readings, and films viewed in class. Length: 2 pages.


POEM Due:

Write a poem on any subject, any style. One page at least.


DOWNFALL OF THE MAYANS
Write a report on the reason for the downfall of the Mayan civilization.  


NOVEL

ON-GOING END OF THE YEAR SPECIAL PROJECT: Read a Hispanic novel in Spanish. As you read, create a personal Spanish/English vocabulary list of words that were new to you. (See note above) Write a book report in Spanish which describes the setting, lists the characters and explain why you believe they are included in the novel. Include a general summary of the plot, share your favorite chapter and explain why it is your favorite. Analyze the message the author presents or purpose of the story. Conclude with a recommendation to either read or not read this novel.

1st Semester Spanish 3 assignments

SPECIAL PROJECTS: Be aware that each month a special project is due. By the end of the semester you must read a short story in Spanish & write a review. Choose one now and be working on it all semester.  

 

EXTRA CREDIT: Extra credit can be earned by writing up a mini report in Spanish related to a Spanish-speaking country. Ideas: elaborating on the current reading & discussion assignment in the textbook, (an author, book, custom, tradition, geographical site, etc…) a current event (news) from a Spanish-speaking country. It does not have to be long, just show you have done some research, and practice expressing yourself in Spanish. Present it to the class. More ideas and information can be found by browsing through this class webpage.

CULTURAL AWARENESS: Read “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Muñoz Ryan (children’s book in English) sometime during the year. Write a report in English.
